GABS Hottest 100: three Birchal-backed breweries crack the top 10

Back to Blogs
Your Mates Brewing, Bridge Road Brewers and Black Hops tap into consumer trends as top winners at the 2022 GABS Craft Beer and Cider Festival.

The Great Australasian Beer SpecTAPular (or GABS, for short) has been a fixture of the craft beer scene since its inception in 2011. With over 52,000 attendees across four major events, the GABS aims to celebrate the creativity and diversity of brewers across Australia & New Zealand.

Every December, they hold the Hottest 100, the biggest and most influential craft beer people's choice poll in Australia. Considered one of the biggest polls of its type in the world, the Hottest 100 maps contemporary beer tastes and consumer trends across the country from hundreds of breweries and thousands of beers.

Birchal was thrilled to learn the Larry Pale Ale from Your Mates Brewing Co (QLD) landed at #5, while Beechworth Pale Ale from Bridge Road Brewers (VIC) came in at #9 and the G.O.A.T Hazy IPA from Black Hops (QLD) landed at #10 in this year's competition.

In addition to the brews featured in the Top 10, we're also thrilled to see other Birchal alumni beers featured in the list, such as:

● Black Hops Brewery East Coast Haze (#20)

● Black Flag Brewing's RAGE Juicy Pale Ale (#35)

● Dainton Beer's Equalizer Hazy Pale (#60)

● Black Hops Brewery Pale Ale (#63)

● Black Flag Brewing's Astro Punk XPA (#69)

● Your Mates Brewing Co Sally IPA (#71)

● Dainton Beer's Blood Orange NEIPA (#78) and;

● Dainton Beer's Jungle Juice Hazy IPA (#97)

To date, there have been over 20 Australian crowd-sourced funding brewery campaigns since this method of funding launched in 2017. With a total of 11 brewery campaigns across all platforms in 2022 alone, the last 12 months has seen a staggering $16.5m raised for craft breweries across the east coast. Of these campaigns, eight have been hosted by Birchal.
